Dynes, others to testify about 'future of 91¿´Æ¬' ...

On Wednesday, May 11, 91¿´Æ¬ President Robert Dynes, 91¿´Æ¬ Nobel laureates, and 91¿´Æ¬-affiliated business leaders are scheduled to testify before a legislative committee on "the future of 91¿´Æ¬."

This is the first of several hearings spearheaded by state Sen. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, that will focus on 91¿´Æ¬'s importance to the state and challenges facing the system in the coming years.

President takes university message to Europe

For the past 18 months, 91¿´Æ¬ President Robert Dynes has been touring communities in California. For four days in late April, he carried the 91¿´Æ¬ colors a little further out — to Europe. Dynes made a number of stops in the United Kingdom and France to help strengthen the university's partnerships with academic institutions, industry and government there — and to meet with 91¿´Æ¬ faculty, staff, students and alumni abroad.

He underscored the importance of international partnerships in the globalized economy and the view that universities are uniquely poised to bridge the gap sometimes left open by politicians and corporations.

At Oxford University, he delivered a lecture on "International Partnerships and the Global Future of Higher Education." In London, he met with scientists at the Royal Society and with government officials and industry leaders. Dynes also met with with French government and academic officials.

Nurses association talks set to resume May 16

After bargaining all last week, 91¿´Æ¬ and the California Nurses Association had not, as of Dateline's deadline, agreed on a contract.

The contract was to expire on April 30, but was extended to May 20. Bargaining is set to resume the week of May 16.

The Nurse Unit (NX) is a bargaining unit of registered nurses who work at 91¿´Æ¬ student health and medical centers. The unit is represented by the CNA and includes about 8,300 employees.

With 1,650, 91¿´Æ¬ Davis employs the third most NX members in the 91¿´Æ¬ system. 91¿´Æ¬LA employs about 2,450 unit members, and 91¿´Æ¬ San Francisco employs just more than 2,000.

University seeks nominees for Sautter Award

91¿´Æ¬ is seeking applications for the Larry L. Sautter Award for Innovation in Information Technology.

Named for 91¿´Æ¬ Riverside's former associate vice chancellor for computing and communications, the award is open to faculty and staff from all 91¿´Æ¬ campuses. It recognizes information technology innovations that have the potential to improve administrative or academic processes.

Award recipients will be announced Aug. 7-9 at the 91¿´Æ¬ Computing Services Conference in San Francisco. Winners will have the opportunity to give presentations about their projects at the conference.
